Diamond Inclusion Study Guide: Needle (Ndl)
Definition
A needle (Ndl) is a thin, elongated crystal inclusion within a diamond. By strict GIA definition, it must be longer than it is wide and appear as a distinct rod or line of included material. Needles can occur singly or in groups (often referred to as a "cluster" if densely packed, though plotted individually if discernible). They are typically composed of other minerals that crystallized before or alongside the diamond, or they can be diamond crystals themselves with an elongated habit.
Characteristics & Identification
- Appearance: Looks like a tiny rod, hair, or line trapped within the diamond.
- Color: Can vary. Often whitish, transparent, or dark (if composed of certain minerals or if light reflects off it in a specific way).
- Location: Can be found anywhere within the diamond—from near the surface to deep within the stone.
- Impact on Clarity: The impact depends heavily on the needle's size, number, color, and location.
- A single, minute, transparent needle deep in a stone might only affect clarity at the VVS level.
- Large, dark, or centrally located needles can significantly lower the clarity grade (VS, SI, or I).
- Distinguishing Features:
- Vs. Pinpoint (Pp): A needle is elongated; a pinpoint is a tiny, dot-like inclusion.
- Vs. Feather (Ftr): A feather is a break or cleavage (often jagged or planar), while a needle is a solid, distinct crystal.
- Vs. Crystal (Xtl): A general crystal inclusion has length, width, and depth (often appearing blocky or multifaceted). A needle is specifically characterized by its very elongated, thin shape.
Plotting Instructions (GIA Standard)
Plotting must adhere strictly to GIA laboratory guidelines. Accuracy is paramount for GEM 230.
- Color: Plot all internal inclusions, including needles, in Red.
- Symbol: The symbol is a straight or slightly curved line, matching the approximate length and orientation of the needle as seen through the crown or pavilion.
- Do not draw it as an oval or a rectangle.
- The line thickness should roughly correlate with the needle's prominence, though precision in length and placement is more critical.
- Placement: Plot the needle exactly where it appears in the stone relative to the facet junctions on the plotting diagram.
- If it is visible through the crown, plot it on the crown diagram.
- If it is only visible through the pavilion, plot it on the pavilion diagram.
- If visible from both sides, plot it on the side where it is most prominent or closest to the surface, and optionally (if required by specific exam instructions for deep inclusions) indicated on the opposite side with a dashed line (though standard practice usually plots on the primary viewing side).
- Abbreviation: The GIA abbreviation is Ndl.
- Groups: If there is a distinct, small group of needles, plot each one individually if they are resolvable at 10x magnification. Do not use a generic symbol for a group unless they form a distinct cloud (Cld) where individual needles cannot be resolved.
Examples & Scenarios (Exam Preparation)
- Scenario 1: Minute transparent needle under the table.
- Plotting: A very short, fine red line under the table facet on the crown diagram.
- Clarity Impact: Likely VVS1 or VVS2, depending on exact size and visibility.
- Scenario 2: Long, dark needle stretching from the crown to the pavilion.
- Plotting: A bold red line indicating the exact path. Plot on the crown diagram if it reaches or is near the crown surface.
- Clarity Impact: Could be VS2 or SI1, depending on how noticeable it is face-up.
- Scenario 3: "Silk" (Network of very fine needles).
- Note: If the needles are so fine and numerous that they cannot be plotted individually and create a hazy area, this is plotted as a Cloud (Cld) (red dotted outline), not as individual needles. However, if individual elongated structures are distinct, they must be plotted as Ndl.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Plotting a small, slightly elongated crystal as a needle. (If it has distinct width and depth, it's a Xtl).
- Using black or green ink. (Internal inclusions are ALWAYS red).
- Drawing the line too thick, making it look like a feather or a large, blocky crystal.
- Incorrect placement relative to facet junctions on the plotting diagram.
