Clarity Characteristic: Twinning Wisp (TW)
1. Official Definition and Origin
A Twinning Wisp (TW) is an internal clarity characteristic (inclusion). It is defined strictly as a series of pinpoints, clouds, or crystals that form in a diamond's growth plane; it is associated with crystal distortion and twinning planes.
- Origin: Formed during diamond crystallization. They occur exclusively in twinned diamond crystals (macles) where the crystal lattice underwent a change in growth direction. The resulting structural stress and irregularity trap microscopic inclusions along the twinning plane.
- Composition: A twinning wisp is not a single structural anomaly. It is an aggregate characteristic typically composed of a mixture of pinpoints, tiny crystals, and clouds that ribbon or fan out across the twinning plane.
2. Microscopic Appearance (10x Magnification)
Under standard 10x magnification using darkfield illumination, a twinning wisp typically presents as:
- A flat, ribbon-like, or radiating pattern of inclusions.
- Often extending outward from the center of the stone toward the girdle.
- Depending on relief, they may appear as faint, transparent, wispy white streaks or, occasionally, darker concentrated zones if the constituent crystals are dark.
- Crucial Diagnostic Feature: Because they form along a twinning plane, they are strictly planar (flat) in their orientation, though they may twist or angle across the faceted stone.
3. Strict GIA Plotting Protocol
Plotting must accurately reflect the size, shape, and location of the characteristic as viewed through the microscope.
- Abbreviation: TW
- Plotting Color: Red (Internal Characteristic).
- Plotting Symbol: A squiggly, wavy, or jagged line with short, perpendicular intersecting hash marks (slashes) drawn across the length of the line.
- Location and Scale:
- You must plot the twinning wisp exactly where it is located relative to the facet junctions.
- Draw the symbol to scale. Do not exaggerate its size, and do not minimize it.
- If the TW is visible face-up, plot it on the Crown Diagram.
- If the TW is visible face-down, or extends deep into the pavilion, plot it on the Pavilion Diagram as well, ensuring three-dimensional accuracy.
- Key to Symbols:
- The abbreviation "Twinning Wisp" must be written out in the Key to Symbols.
- Order of Impact: If the twinning wisp is the primary grade-setting inclusion, it must be listed first in the Key to Symbols. If it is secondary to a larger crystal or feather, it is listed subsequent to the primary characteristic.
4. Impact on Clarity Grade
To assess the impact of a twinning wisp on the final clarity grade, you must evaluate it against the Five Clarity Factors:
- Size: How large is the overall spread of the wisp? Twinning wisps often cover a large surface area along the plane.
- Number: Is there a single wisp, or multiple wisps radiating along the plane?
- Location: Is it directly under the table (highly visible), or positioned out toward the girdle where it may be masked by crown facets?
- Relief: How much does the wisp contrast against the host diamond? Faint, low-relief wisps may result in a VS1 or VS2 grade, whereas heavy, high-relief, or dark wisps can easily drop a stone into the SI or I categories.
- Nature: As an inclusion, it is considered internal and will prevent the diamond from achieving a Flawless (FL) or Internally Flawless (IF) grade.
5. Common Grader Pitfalls (Instructor's Warnings)
- Misidentification: Do not confuse a twinning wisp with internal graining. Internal graining consists of lines, angles, or curves caused by crystal growth irregularities, but it does not contain the physical particles (crystals/pinpoints) that make up a twinning wisp.
- Over-Plotting: Novice graders often draw individual pinpoints and clouds along the wisp. Do not do this. If the aggregate characteristic meets the definition of a twinning wisp, plot the TW symbol. Do not clutter the plot with redundant pinpoint and cloud symbols along the twinning plane.
- Missing the Plane: Because twinning wisps are planar, they can become nearly invisible when viewed edge-on. You must rock and tilt the stone in the tweezers to observe the full face of the inclusion.
