1. DEFINITION & PATHOLOGY
A Grain Center is an internal clarity characteristic classified strictly as an inclusion.
Per GIA laboratory standards, it is defined as a small, localized, and concentrated area of crystal distortion. Unlike a pinpoint or a crystal (which represent trapped foreign minerals or void spaces), a grain center is a structural anomaly within the diamond's own carbon crystal lattice. It occurs due to irregular growth or a slight change in orientation during the diamond's formation.
2. VISUAL IDENTIFICATION (10x MAGNIFICATION)
Proper identification requires strict control of your lighting environment, specifically darkfield illumination.
- Visual Appearance: Can appear white, dark, or completely transparent.
- Structural Presentation: Typically presents as a concentrated patch of thread-like or pinpoint-like distortion. It often resembles a tiny, localized swirl in the crystal structure.
- Lighting & Angle Dependency: Because a grain center is a structural distortion and not a solid mass, its visibility is heavily dependent on the viewing angle. It will flash into visibility and disappear entirely as you rock and tilt the stone in the tweezers.
3. GIA PLOTTING PROTOCOL
Adhere strictly to these plotting rules. Deviations will result in a deduction on your practical exam.
- Ink Color: RED. All internal characteristics (inclusions) are plotted in red ink.
- Plotting Symbol: When plotted, a grain center is drawn as a small, red, swirling mark (often resembling a tiny tornado or a localized spiral of dashes). It must be placed in the exact relative position on the plotting diagram where it appears in the stone.
- Comments Section (The Exception): If the grain center is minor and is not the grade-setting characteristic, it is standard practice to omit it from the plotting diagram to avoid clutter. However, when omitted, it must be disclosed in the Comments section of the grading report with the exact phrasing: "Grain center not shown."
4. IMPACT ON CLARITY GRADE
You must understand the threshold at which a grain center impacts the final clarity call.
- Structural Integrity: Grain centers do not compromise the structural integrity of the diamond. They are not breaks or fractures.
- The Internally Flawless (IF) Threshold: Strict GIA standards dictate that transparent, non-reflective internal graining may be present in an Internally Flawless stone. However, because a grain center is a concentrated area of distortion, if it is distinctly visible at 10x magnification as a localized feature, it typically prevents an IF grade.
- Grade-Setting: If the grain center is whitish, dark, highly reflective, or causes a noticeable loss of transparency in its localized area under 10x magnification, it becomes a grade-setting inclusion. In these instances, it will typically set the grade at VVS1 or lower, depending on its size, relief, and overall impact on the stone's appearance.
INSTRUCTOR'S NOTE: Memorize the distinction between a Grain Center (internal, red ink) and Surface Graining (external, green ink). Confusing the two on the grading floor is unacceptable.
