The "2-Stone Practical" Worksheet Workflow

Master your muscle memory. You have an average of one hour per stone to completely grade two diamonds on the standard GIA worksheet. Use this guide to optimize your pacing, avoid missing fields, and navigate the lab efficiently.

Worksheet Sequence Checklist

Follow this exact flow to match the GIA grading worksheet from top to bottom. Checking these off mentally ensures no mandatory fields are left blank.

1. Administrative & Initial ID

Student number, date, stone number, shape, and cutting style.

2. Measurements & Proportions

Minimum/Maximum diameter, depth, table %, total depth %, crown angle/height, pavilion angle/depth, star length, lower half %, girdle thickness (min/max), and culet size.

3. Plotting the Diamond

Accurately map internal (red) and external (green) characteristics on the crown and pavilion diagrams. Remember your key to symbols!

4. Clarity, Polish, & Symmetry

Assign the final clarity grade based on size, number, position, nature, and relief of inclusions. Grade polish and symmetry (Excellent to Poor).

5. Color & Fluorescence

Determine color grade against master stones. Check UV fluorescence intensity (None to Very Strong) and color.

6. Final Verification

Scan every single box on the form. Is the date there? Are comments noted if needed? Is it legible?

Scout the Room

When you receive your stone, immediately look at the Color and UV stations. If they are empty, go there first before you sit down at your microscope.

Pivot when Busy

If there is a line, stay at your desk. Focus heavily on Plotting and Proportions. Keep an eye on the stations—the second someone leaves, pause your plotting and make your move.

60-Minute Pacing

Per Stone

Minutes 0-5 (5 min)

Initial Inspection & Strategy

Clean the stone. Basic visual check. Run to Color/UV stations if they are empty.

Minutes 5-20 (15 min)

Proportions & Measurements

Use your gauge and reticle. Lock in your depth, table, angles, and percentages quickly.

Minutes 20-45 (25 min)

Deep Plotting

This is the most time-consuming part. Map internal and external features. Don't overthink minor blemishes, focus on grade-setting characteristics.

Minutes 45-50 (5 min)

Assigning Grades

Commit to your Clarity, Polish, and Symmetry grades based on your plotting.

Minutes 50-55 (5 min)

Color & Fluorescence (If not done)

Make your final trip to the master stones and UV box if you haven't yet.
